Units 1.1 & 1.5

This lesson focuses on terms to describe weight and making comparisons.

Word Banks: A key feature of these initial lessons is building up students vocabulary linked to the different areas of the module.

You could allocate a set time for students to work individually, in pairs or small groups to collate suitable words for describing weight. For any lower ability students, a cut out and sort activity would be good. Allowing them to separate describing words for weight and size (they will work with size in another lesson).

Once a sufficient Word Bank has been generated, the students can begin to work, with or without support, through the worksheet.

Units 1.2 & 1.5

This lesson focuses on terms to describe length and making comparisons.

Word Banks: Width (wider/narrower), Height (higher/lower) and Length (wider/shorter)

As we generally use the above 3 words for dimension, this lesson focuses on allocating the correct word to the correct dimension.

The comparative words for each dimension can then be used to compare objects.

Supporting Activity: Unit 2.1 focuses on 2D and 3D shapes. You can use 3D shapes or objects around the classroom to be compared in width, height and length.

1.3 and 1.5.jpg

Units 1.3 & 1.5

This lesson focuses on terms to describe weight and making comparisons.

Word Banks: Heavy and Light (heavier and lighter)

As we generally use the above 2 words for weight, this lesson focuses on allocating the correct word to the correct object.

The comparative words for each dimension can then be used to compare objects.

Resources: For this activity, use 4 bags. Bag A contains 2kg, Bag B contains 7kg, Bag C contains 1kg and Bag 4 contains 4kg. We suggest using small bags of flour (1kg) for loading the bags but you may find other suitable items. (This weight suggestion is on page 2 of the worksheet)

Unit 1.4

This lesson focuses on terms to describe capacity and making comparisons.

Word Banks: Full, nearly full, half full, nearly empty and empty.

As we generally use the above 5 terms for capacity, this lesson focuses on allocating the correct word to the correct level of capacity.

The comparative words more or less can be used when comparing capacity but we have not focussed on this in the activity as they differ from the simple words used to describe capacity. This could work as a 'Deeper Dive' activity.

2.1 and 2.2.jpg

Units 2.1 & 2.2

This lesson focuses on the names of basics 2D and 3D shapes. Concrete objects are advised to support this lesson.

Basic Shapes: Triangle (3D - Pyramid), Square (3D - Cube), Rectangle (Rectangular prism) and Circle (cylinder)

This worksheet requires understanding of the 4 basics shapes and their 3D counterparts.

Entry Level 2 (D/505/4859)
Using Size, Shape and Space

All units are listed below. Schemes of work will identify which units are met.

Be able to measure, estimate and compare length.

1.1 Measure length, using common standard and non-standard units, for example metre, centimetre, paces, feet.

1.2 Estimate lengths.

1.3 Compare different lengths for example more than a metre, less than a metre.

1.4 Read simple scales for length to the nearest labelled division.

1.5 Choose and use appropriate units and measuring instruments.

Be able to measure, estimate and compare weight.

2.1 Measure weight, using common standard units for example grammes, kilogrammes.

2.2 Estimate weights.

2.3 Compare weights, for example more than a kilogram, less than a kilogram.

2.4 Read simple scales for weight to the nearest labelled division.

2.5 Choose and use appropriate units and measuring instruments.

Be able to measure, estimate and compare capacity.

3.1 Measure capacity, using common standard and non-standard units, for example litre, cupful.

3.2 Estimate capacity.

3.3 Compare capacity for example more than a litre, less than a litre.

3.4 Read simple scales for capacity to the nearest labelled division.

3.5 Choose and use appropriate units and measuring instruments.

Units 1.1 - 1.5 (all targets)

This lesson focuses on measuring, estimating and comparing length whilst using appropriate units and instruments.

Context: In this scheme of work, students will use feet and inches. Centimetres and metres are used in context 2.

To encourage outdoor learning, students can select any of our animal hutches to measure, estimate and compare.

They will use hand measurements as a non-standard unit.

Units 2.1  2.3  2.4  2.5 (2.2 separate)

This lesson focuses on measuring, estimating and comparing weight whilst using appropriate units and instruments.

Context: In this scheme of work, students will use Kg, grammes and weighing scales. Stones and pounds are used in context 2.

You will need 4 bags containing (5kg, 8kg, 3kg and 1kg). Packs of flower in bags work well.

Blindfolds are required for the plenary in which students lift the same bags and try to put them in weight order.

Units 2.2 (supporting the above sheet)

This lesson focuses on estimating weight in kg.

Context: In this scheme of work, students will use Kg, grammes and weighing scales. Stones and pounds are used in context 2.

You will need 4 bags containing (1kg, 2kg, 4kg, 5kg, 7kg and 10kg). Keep your bags of flour from last week for this.

Students can lift any of the bags at any time to compare and estimate. Advise them that the maximum weight in any bag is 10kg.

Units 3.1 - 3.5 (all units)

This lesson focuses on measuring, estimating and comparing capacity whilst using appropriate units and instruments.

Context: In this scheme of work, students will use millilitres, litres and Measuring Jugs. Pints are used in context 2.

You will need 6x 2 litre bottles all filled to different levels and a plastic cup (non-standard measurement). Students will estimate the volume of water before they pour the water, cup by cup, into the measuring jug. By counting the cupfuls they cover non-standard units and then measure accurately in the measuring jug.

Please see the reference sheet for support with 2 litre capacity.

Entry Level 2 Sign.png

Units 4.1 - 4.4 (all units)

This lesson focuses on 2D and 3D shapes, positional vocabulary and space.

Context: In this scheme of work, students will name and identify features (sides) of more complex shapes (moving on from Entry Level 1).

The deep dive element features in the questioning on the number of sides a cylinder has as this has frequently been difficult for students at this level and challenges them when visualising a 3D shape in a 2D format.

Students then problem solve with the positional vocabulary.
